This action follows the inaccurate reporting of Hind’s murder. The BBC article claims she was found ‘dead’ when she was found murdered.
INSTRUCTIONS / STEPS:
- Go to the BBC News complaints page.
- Complaint is about “BBC websites or apps”. Then select “BBC News website”.
- Then enter the link to the article (please see above).
- Select “no” when asked if linked to a previous complaint. Then select “continue”.
- “Select the category which best describes the complaint”: select “factual error or inaccuracy”.
- Then write the subject of the complaint yourself. This is so that their systems do not detect the exact same complaint coming in. Word it along the lines of, but not matching to: “6 year old Gazan girl was found killed, not ‘dead’”.
- After this, copy and paste the template message (below). Feel free to modify your copy so it does not exactly match the template. (*if you have more time, then please change your copy of our template or write your own with the necessary information about violation of policies just so the BBC don’t ignore the many same complaints as spam)
- Then click ‘yes when asked if you would like a response to the complaint, and click continue.
- On the next page you will have to fill in personal details. Use other names you may have or initials and avoid using exact addresses.
TEMPLATE MESSAGE:
I write to express deep concern about the BBC article titled “Hind Rajab, 6, found dead in Gaza days after phone calls for help.” The use of “found dead” instead of “murdered” is misleading and fails to accurately depict the tragic events. The article describes how Hind, her family, and two paramedics were killed by IDF soldiers. Additionally, BBC reported that all of the dead family members in the car, including Hind, had “showed signs of gunfire and shelling”. This evidently shows Hind was murdered, and didn’t merely die but was rather targeted. Using the verb ‘dead’ amounts to misleading factual inaccuracy and passive language obscures responsibility and violates Sections 3.1 and 3.3 of BBC’s Editorial Guidelines which demand accuracy.
Furthermore, the inclusion of the sentence “Israel has previously accused Hamas of using ambulances to transport its weapons and fighters” at the end of the article lacks proper context and appears to justify the targeting of medical personnel by Israeli forces. This violates Section 4.3 of your Editorial Guidelines which demands impartiality. It is therefore inaccurate and inappropriate to present such an allegation without providing balanced reporting or critical analysis.
As a reputable news organization, BBC has a responsibility to uphold journalistic integrity. It is crucial that news outlets maintain impartiality, especially in conflict situations. I urge the BBC to amend the article promptly and reconsider its editorial choices to ensure future reporting adheres to principles of fairness, accuracy, and respect for human dignity.
I look forward to seeing BBC’s commitment to providing accurate, comprehensive coverage of global events, and an amendment, as BBC have breached the Broadcasting Code, specifically Article 5 which demands due accuracy and due impartiality.
