This action follows BBC’s publishing of an article reporting on the acquittal of a Jewish man who violently attached a Christian nun in occupied East Jerusalem, in which the title omits the identity of the perpetrator by simply describing him as a “man”, inconsistent with editorial guidelines and a dangerous display of double standards. Complain to the BBC now by following the steps below:

INSTRUCTIONS / STEPS:

• Go to the BBC News complaints page.
• Complaint is about “BBC websites or apps”. Then select “BBC News website”.
• Then copy and paste the link to the article (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cpwl54kddeko). 
• Select “no” when asked if related to a previous complaint. Then select “continue”.

• “Select the category which best describes the complaint”: select “Bias”. 

• Then write the subject of the complaint yourself (limited to 50 characters). This is so that multiple identical complaints aren’t flagged up as spam and then ignored. Ensure it includes that BBC bias led to protection of identity of a perpetrator in the headline of the article, inconsistent with impartiality guidelines.

• After this, copy and paste the template message (below). Feel free to modify your copy so it does not exactly match the template. (*if you have more time, then please change your copy of our template so that multiple identical messages aere not ignored and disregarded as spam. Ensure the 2000 character limit is kept in mind).

• Then click  ‘yes’ when asked if you would like a response to the complaint, and click continue.
• On the next page you will have to fill in personal details. Use other names you may have or initials.
• At the very end, ensure you verify your submission within the same hour by clicking the link BBC will email you so that it counts.

TEMPLATE MESSAGE: 

In the news article whose link has been pasted,, using the generic identifier “Man” is a significant double standard and a direct breach of Section 2 of the BBC Editorial Guidelines (Impartiality). Section 2.1 states impartiality means “not favouring one side over another” and requires challenging all sides with “consistent rigour.” Section 2.2.4 dictates that “the highest level of impartiality is required in news and journalism.”

The BBC failed to apply “consistent rigour” here. The lone perpetrator was Yona Schreiber, an Israeli Jewish settler from an illegal West Bank settlement (source: Middle East Eye). By sanitising the headline and omitting the perpetrator’s background, the BBC shields his identity. This frames a sectarian assault purely as an isolated medical incident, stripping away critical regional context through unjustifiable ambiguity.

There is a systematic lack of consistency in how the BBC structures headlines depending on an attacker’s background. When the attacker is Palestinian, the BBC routinely features their national identity directly in the headline title. Consider this established pattern of BBC headlines:

• August 2022: “Palestinian gunman wounds eight in Jerusalem attack”.
• February 2025: “Palestinian gunman kills Israeli soldiers as UN warns over W Bank operation”.
• September 2025: “Six killed by Palestinian gunmen at Jerusalem bus stop”.

When a Palestinian attacks individuals, their demographic identity is deemed vital headline information. Yet, when a lone Jewish extremist attacks a nun in the exact same region, they are granted total anonymity as a generic “Man” in the title.

This asymmetry violates Section 2 by “favouring one side over another”, misleading audiences who scan titles. It is paramount that the BBC reviews its headline terminology to ensure that identity, nationality, and context are applied with absolute, unbiased consistency.
