This action follows The Guardian’s publication of an article reporting on a NBC news team member not being spared from illegal Israeli settler attacks in which the title omits the perpetrator, by using the passive voice, and waits until the ninth line when including the title to declare who attacked the Palestinian woman and NBC team member. Permitting the media to continue like this allows the public to be subjectively and inaccurately informed of the truth.

I believe the framing of this piece fails to meet the standards of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors’ Code of Practice, as well as The Guardian’s own editorial guidelines regarding objectivity and clarity. Specifically, the article introduces significant ambiguity by delaying critical context.

The headline and opening paragraphs rely heavily on the passive voice, completely omitting the identity of the attackers. A reader must navigate down to the ninth line of the text to finally learn that Israeli settlers perpetrated the attack.

This delayed attribution creates a highly misleading ambiguity. For casual readers skimming headlines or social media feeds, the lack of immediate clarity allows room for incorrect assumptions—including the misapprehension that the perpetrators may have been Palestinian. In the current climate of rapidly advancing illegal Israeli settlement activity, failing to specify the source of the violence upfront obscures the reality of the situation and compromises the article’s objectivity.

To maintain The Guardian’s high standards of transparent and ethical journalism, it is paramount that the headline, subheadline, or opening paragraph be updated to clearly identify the perpetrators from the outset.
